Stoke City have reportedly turned down a bid from Aston Villa for star goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in another sign that Brad Guzan’s time at Villa Park could be over.

The good news for current USMNT No. 1 keeper Guzan is that not only did Stoke turn down the bid, but that a number of other clubs are interested in the want-away Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper.

Begovic, 27, wasn’t happy to spend some time on the bench as Mark Hughes preferred young Jack Butland at the end of last season.

From Sky Sports:

Begovic, 27, is entering the final 12 months of his contract and is understood to have held discussions over his future with manager Mark Hughes and chief executive Tony Scholes, who are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

Several English newspapers have reported that Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in the Bosnia-Herzegovina international, and it now appears Aston Villa’s intentions to provide top-quality competition to Brad Guzan are clear.

Guzan slid behind Shay Given on the Aston Villa depth chart soon after Tim Sherwood took over last season. This after two-plus seasons as the full-time starter for the Villans.

As recently as Thursday, Guzan has said he wants to finish his career in MLS, but age 30 is far from the end for a goalkeeper. Will he stay at Villa to win his job? Regularl playing time will be critical as Tim Howard returns to the USMNT set-up after the Gold Cup.
