Fresh off three appearances at the U-20 World Cup, U.S. right back Desevio Payne will take his first steps as a full-on professional this summer.

Payne, a 6-foot 19-year-old, is a highly-touted prospect and has played in two matches with Groningen’s first team. He’s also been with the Eredivisie set-up since 2012.

He also said he’s hoping to be called up to the U.S. U-23 squad for Olympic qualifying in October (loose translation):

“These are things you do not see very often. National coach Juergen Klinsmann spoke to us via Skype. Really great to be with. I read on Twitter that is already now talking about qualifying for the Olympics for the USA under-23, but I focus me now completely back to FC Groningen. I will somehow hear if I am eligible for a qualifying tournament. “

He is the son of Trinidadian and Dutch parents who met at American college, and his family moved to the Netherlands when he was an infant. Payne is still eligible to represent the Netherlands.
