England’s fairytale run to its first Women’s World Cup semifinal meets the reigning champions in Edmonton on Wednesday

The Three Lionesses’ run through group play and the knockout rounds has made them the darlings of England, and an upset of Japan would set up an intriguing match-up with the big, bad United States.

Lucy Bronze has arguably been the star of the tournament for England, and the national team is carrying the hopes of women’s soccer being at a tipping point back home.

But Japan has been very, very good, beating Cameroon, Switzerland, Ecuador, Netherlands and Australia en route to this semifinal. Japan is bidding to join Germany and the U.S. as two-time winners (Germany is the only team to win consecutive World Cups).
