Can Jurgen Klinsmann’s side defend the Gold Cup crown they won in 2013 to seal a spot at the 2017 Confederations Cup?

Here are the forwards who are tasked with making the U.S. national team champions of the CONCACAF region this summer.

Full name: Josmer Volmy Altidore
Age: 25
Hometown: Livingston, New Jersey
Position: Striker
Caps/goals: 81/27
Club: Toronto FC

Best moment in a U.S. shirt: Scoring a hat trick against Bosnia away in a friendly in the USA’s 4-3 comeback win in 2013. Altidore stretched his scoring streak to five consecutive games, which set a record for any USMNT player in history.

Starter or squad player at Gold Cup? Starter. Altidore usually divides opinion among USMNT fans, but his hold-up play is pivotal to the USA’s attacking unit.

Full name: Clinton Drew Dempsey
Age: 32
Hometown: Nacogdoches, Texas
Position: Forward, Attacking midfielder
Caps/goals: 113/41
Club: Seattle Sounders

Best moment in a U.S. shirt: Dempsey’s goal in the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinal vs. Spain is memorable, plus that goal vs. England in the 2010 World Cup (poor old Robert Green) but those two strikes in the 2014 World Cup will take some beating. Dempsey put the U.S. 1-0 up vs. Ghana early on with a ridiculous run and cool finish, plus his strike against Portugal in Manaus was pretty special too. Look, Deuce has had so many good moments in a U.S. jersey that its hard to pick one. But we have to… so I am going for this goal vs. Ghana.

Starter or squad player at World Cup? Starter

Full name: Aron Johannsson
Age: 24
Hometown: Mobile, Alabama
Position: Forward, Winger
Caps/goals: 12/3
Club: AZ Alkmaar

Best moment in a US shirt: Johannsson’s first goal for the U.S. still stands out as he rifled home an effort against Panama to doom their World Cup qualification bid. However his link-up play with former AZ Alkmaar teammate Jozy Altidore  to put the USA 2-1 up in a recent friendly vs. Denmark showed what he is capable of.

Starter or squad player at Gold Cup? Probably off the bench. Johannsson will not be given the lone role ahead of Altidore, but if Jozy struggles early on then the Icelandic-American will be next in line to start up top.

Zardes has burst onto the USMNT scene in recent months. Will he get a start this summer?

Full name: Christopher Elliott Wondolowski
Age: 32
Hometown: Danville, California
Position: Forward
Caps/goals: 28/10
Club: San Jose Earthquakes

Best moment in a U.S. shirt: His run as starter for nearly every game of the 2013 Gold Cup tournament. Wondo scored five times and entered folklore after having an extra ‘W’ on his jersey after his name was misspelled as “Wondowlowski” by the U.S. kit man for the group game against Belize. Wondo score a hat trick in that match and has worn an extra ‘W’ on the inside of his U.S. jersey ever since.

Starter or squad player at Gold Cup? He will be on the bench and ready to come on late in the game if the U.S. needs a goal.

Full name: Gyasi Zardes
Age: 23
Hometown: Hawthorne, California
Position: Forward/winger
Caps/goals: 8/1
Club: LA Galaxy

Best moment in a U.S. shirt: His recent surge into the national team setup was capped off with a fine goal against Holland in Amsterdam. His first strike for the U.S., Zardes poked home instinctively to set the USMNT on their way to a famous win over Holland.

Starter or squad player at Gold Cup? Starter. After a strong display against Germany and then as a sub vs. Guatemala, it seems like Zardes could fill the slot on the left wing. If he isn’t starting, he will be the first player off the bench.
