Frank Lampard will likely make his MLS debut this weekend when New York City FC tangles with Toronto FC, and the Chelsea and England star is meeting the media.
It’s started with a club-run interview on NYC’s site, where Lampard is asked about a number of hot-button team topics. From NYC’s poor on-field start to finding some form, and from the challenge ahead to a match against old friend Steven Gerrard, Lampard opened up to the site.

NYC enters the weekend in the muddled East’s 7th place, three points back of a playoff spot and four points back of second place Columbus. It’s all there for the MLS expansion side, which is gaining Lampard and Andrea Pirlo.
Disappointingly, Lampard wasn’t asked about the latter. Here are some nuggets he did offer, from NYCFC.com:
On NYCFC’s tough start: “It’s pretty obvious we’re not doing quite as well as we would’ve wanted to. From players through to staff we’ve found the difficulties of starting a new franchise. It’s never easy putting things together. There are many teams with players who’ve worked together for a long time. What I will say is the improvement in the team recently, in winning games, in getting results, which is of huge importance. Even when I’ve seen us lose some games, it’s been a fine line instead of decidedly losing the game. It’s not like we’re playing terrible at all. I can see the progress. I’m very confident and I have no fears for the future.”
On his goals: “To win… For me this is as much of a challenge as Chelsea was, as Man City was. I play football to win. I train hard to give my best to the team to help that happen.”
On playing Gerrard again: “I can’t wait. I played against Steven so many times in my career. At one stage we seemed to play each other like 10 times a season… As soon as the fixture list, that date was penciled in. I’m ready for that game. It’s two big, big clubs playing against each other.”
