El Salvador 0-0 Canada: Neither side seizes chance to summit Group B

Canada and El Salvador’s 0-0 tie in Carson late Wednesday ensured that three of the tournament’s first four matches ended in stalemates.

Both clubs sink in their Gold Cup group after Costa Rica and Jamaica staged an exciting 2-2 draw earlier in the day.

This one had significantly less excitement.

Canada keeper Kenny Stamatopolous had a few adventures in net during the first half, and came up with a big save after Irvin Herrera danced through the 18 to his doorstep. Moments later, he’d make another big stop.

That save made Cyle Larin’s halftime a bit easier to stomach, as being down in addition to the Orlando City man’s miss of a gaping goal mouth would’ve been a lot to take. Larin navigated Derby Carrillo’s dive atop the 18, but put his shot into the outer reaches of the stadium.

It remained 0-0 at the break, and onward. Frankly, the second half was pretty disjointed. Marcus Haber had a chance late on that Carrillo collected, and most other chances were taken from outside the 18.

Tosaint Ricketts tried an 81st minute bicycle kick, and his mishit ball nearly lobbed over Carrillo.

Jamaica’s next for Canada on Saturday in Houston, while Costa Rica will play El Salvador.
