Report: AC Milan close to sending El Shaarawy to Monaco

According to Sky Italia reporter Gianluca di Marzio, talks between AC Milan and AS Monaco have progressed staggeringly quickly regarding the potential transfer of Stephan El Shaarawy, and a deal could be struck very soon.

The potential transfer is worth approximately $22 million, according to the report, and would send El Shaarawy out of his home country for the first time in his professional career.

Still just 22 years old, El Shaarawy is a rare combination of youth and experience, but struggled with injuries last season, making just 18 Serie A appearances, tallying three goals and three assists in 1,193 league minutes. He missed a significant chunk of time between February and May with a broken foot. He has 13 caps for Italy in has career, scoring one international goal.

The report suggests talks only began recently between the two clubs, with Monaco looking to replace young winger Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco who joined Atletico Madrid earlier today.

Di Marzio is reporting things are moving so quickly that El Shaarawy could end up having a medical at Monaco as early as Sunday.

El Shaarawy has been known as a talented but streaky player during his four years at AC Milan. He moved to the San Siro in the summer of 2011 from Genoa for $17 million. There have been reports that new Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic wants to change El Shaarawy’s midfield position from out wide to a more central location.
