New York City FC’s all-around strengthening continued on Tuesday with another piece for Jason Kreis’ ailing defense.
Joining Andoni Iraola and Angelino as new NYC backs is Independiente Medellín back Jefferson Mena. The 26-year-old center back has played 81 times between 2011-2015 for the Colombian club.
With Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo arriving, NYC will look quite different once all its pieces are in the fold.
In order to make the move, NYC acquired an international roster slot for 2015 and 2016 from the Galaxy in exchange for allocation money.
Head Coach Jason Kreis commented on adding to his defensive options:
“Jefferson is a player I have been watching for a while and I couldn’t be happier to add him to our squad. His athletic ability and speed will provide us with a strong new option in the center back position. He’s a good technical player just about to hit the prime of his career and will add international quality and experience to the team.”
Sporting Director Claudio Reyna added:
“We’re delighted to come to an agreement to bring Jefferson to New York City FC. He is a talented defender with a commanding presence that will help strengthen our squad.”
New York City has allowed 27 goals in 21 matches this season, including 4 in Sunday’s entertaining draw with Toronto FC.
