Louis van Gaal after transfer binge: “Need to improve at least two positions”

He’s added a heap of world class players this summer, and Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal may not be done.

The Red Devils’ boss has already brought Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian to Old Trafford, adding to his first year’s haul of Ander Herrera, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.

And on Friday, the 63-year-old Van Gaal admitted he wants to strengthen in two spots — one of them presumably center back — to suit his desire for fierce competition within the squad.

From Sky Sports:

“We need a balance in selection and I think we still need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that when it is possible.

“But we shall only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level. And, of course, that is in the eyes of our staff but I have to have confidence that he can cope with the rhythm of the Premier League.”

So United “will only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level”, which is a fancy way of stating the obvious.

Valencia back Nicolas Otamendi and PSG forward Edinson Cavani have been among the stars tipped for Old Trafford moves, though seemingly everyone with well-working boots is linked to United at some point (Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski, Gonzalo Higuain…).
