Christian Benteke could be trading his claret and blue for the Reds, as Liverpool has reportedly triggered the Belgian forward’s release clause of close to $50 million.
The BBC is the source for the report, which says Liverpool met the asking price after selling Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.
The 6-foot-3 striker has 49 goals in 100 matches for Villa, and has been capped 24 times for Belgium with 7 goals.
Benteke still has two years left on his contract at Villa.
…Chief executive Ian Ayre is with Rodgers and his squad for the second leg of their pre-season tour in Brisbane, Australia, but is handling negotiations with Villa over the details of the deal.
It is understood personal terms between Benteke and Liverpool are a formality, although the Anfield club do not yet have permission to do the medical.
Liverpool and Manchester United have made big strides in their race for Premier League supremacy, and the Reds have added Danny Ings, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi (the latter of whom was acquired last summer but loaned back to Lille).
With Benteke, the Reds have even more cover as Daniel Sturridge works his way back from injury. Benteke has fought injury problems himself, but is undoubtedly a force when healthy. Brendan Rodgers would have loads of combination choices depending on opponent, and Benteke has familiarity with Origi as well from their time with Belgium.
Is it Aug. 8 yet?
