Real Madrid say Sergio Ramos will stay despite Manchester United interest

Real Madrid are “100 percent” certain that Sergio Ramos will not move to Manchester United.

Ramos, 29, has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford throughout the summer as reports claim he is unhappy with the way he has been treated behind-the-scenes at the Santiago Bernabeu.

All the talk has been around United wanting to swap goalkeeper David de Gea for the Spanish international defender, with the former having just one-year left on his deal. However it now seems highly unlikely that either player will be heading in the opposite direction, at least this summer.

Speaking in Australia ahead of their friendly against Manchester City on Friday, Real’s new manager Rafael Benitez has moved to quell any speculation regarding Ramos’ future in the Spanish capital.

“I have a lot of respect for Louis van Gaal, but Sergio will be staying with us,” Benitez said. “He is our player, our captain. I would like to see him [at the club] at the beginning of the season, because he’s a key player for us.”

“For me, 100 percent. I insist that it is clear for me and the club, Sergio will be here. Football is a curious world, but Ramos will be staying.”

Ramos has been appointed Real’s new club-captain after legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas was sold to FC Porto this summer.

With Ramos reportedly interested in a switch to the Premier League, this rumor may not go away as he has two years left on his current Real deal but feels as though he should be rewarded in line with other top players at Los Blancos. After 10 years with Real, the central defender has been a mainstay and it seems like he will be sticking around for a little longer.

United still need to strengthen defensively, so maybe manager Louis van Gaal will now focus solely on securing that “surprise” signing he has been talking about…
