Internacional coach: Charles Aranguiz likely to head to Europe soon

Chilean midfielder Charles Aranguiz, who impressed in both the World Cup and Copa America, is likely to be headed out to a European club in the near future, his current manager claimed.

The 26-year-0ld midfielder currently plays for Brazilian club Internacional, but manager Diego Aguirre confirmed he is looking for a move away and a number of top European clubs are interested.

“I was told there was a possibility of it [an Aranguiz departure],” Aguirre said prior to this weekend’s game against Ponte Preta. “It is not definite yet. If Charles leaves, fine. If not, he will play next week at the Beira-Rio [against Chapecoense].”

Aguirre confirmed Aranguiz would not participate in the match this weekend against Ponte Preta.

Aranguiz has been linked to a number of top European clubs, including Chelsea, Marseille, and Bayer Leverkusen. UOL Sport reported that Marseille submitted a $16.4 million initial bid, but it was rejected by Internacional. Meanwhile, Bayer CEO Michael Schade confirmed his club was interested in Aranguiz, telling Bild, “We absolutely would like to sign the player and we will continue to fight for him.”

Chelsea was reportedly “monitoring” Aranguiz earlier this month, but with a crowded midfield at Stamford Bridge it would be hard to see where he’d be able to get any significant playing time. However, he is a very versatile player, able to play at the top, middle, or back of the midfield effectively, so he could potentially be a utility player for Jose Mourinho.
