MLS Snapshot: Houston Dynamo 3-0 LA Galaxy (video)

The game in 100 words (or less): This is why we never anoint anyone as anything in Major League Soccer — let alone a team one or more superstars joining the side in the middle of the season — because it takes time, as is the case all over the world, but especially so in MLS. Playing away from home, as we have to remind ourselves every week, is no joke, especially when going to a place like Houston. On Saturday night, the LA Galaxy, previously winners of four of their last five, went into BBVA Compass Stadium and dropped all three points to the Houston Dynamo, by a final score of 3-0. The defending MLS Cup champions managed just seven shots on the night (three on target), as Steven Gerrard suffered his first MLS defeat. More are likely to come in the coming weeks and months, though there’s just enough time left in the regular season for Bruce Arena to reposition all the pieces for another playoff run.

Three moments that mattered

9′ — Bruin finishes Davis’ cross for a 1-0 lead — Leonardo has been a disaster for every one of his 50 years in MLS, so it comes as no surprise that it was his challenge that led to Will Bruin’s opening goal. The cross from Brad Davis was great, as usual, but the Brazilian center back must do better — something — with it in that part of the field.

27′ — Davis’ pinpoint shot makes it 2-0 — Brad Davis has an immaculate left foot. Brad Davis has an immaculate left foot. Brad Davis has an immaculate left foot.  Got it? OK, good, now don’t forget it again. Six yards of space between Davis and the nearest defender when he unleashes this blast, which is about six too many.

HT — Sprinkler snafus abound in MLS — What’s with the sprinkler systems in MLS these days? Just a few weeks ago, the sprinklers at Sporting Park halted play when they sprayed to life without a moment’s warning. On Saturday night, it was the Dynamo’s sprinkler system that delayed the start of the second half for five full minutes. Gerrard was not pleased.
