Barcelona star Neymar will be missing for two weeks after coming down with the mumps, putting his chances to start the new season in jeopardy.
The club confirmed his medical condition and revealed he will most certainly miss both the European Super Cup against Sevilla as well as both legs of the Spanish Super Cup versus Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona confirmed he had been previously vaccinated against the disease.
The La Liga season doesn’t begin until late August, and Barcelona will begin on August 23 with another match against Athletic Bilbao. Even if Neymar is recovered by then, he would also have to regain his match fitness.
The illness could have an effect on the transfer market, as Pedro is his likely replacement despite being a rumored target by Manchester United, and should Neymar miss the start of the year, Barcelona may decide not to sell for depth reasons, as they cannot replace him right away due to the club’s transfer ban.
