Through 85 minutes of play today, Stoke City’s match against Liverpool looked like it would end in another Britannia Stadium special, a goalless draw.

That all changed when Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho hit a stunning strike from distance, beating Jack Butland and stealing all three points for the Reds.
After the match, Stoke boss Mark Hughes said he didn’t believe either side really deserved the win, and that a draw would have been a fair result. However, he was confident his team would build on the performance in their first match of the season.
The opening 70 minutes of the match were rather uneventful, but both teams put on a late push to try and break the tie. Stoke City had some chances but failed to convert before Coutinho silenced the crowd.
The Potters were without some key attackers, including Marko Arnautovic and Bojan, who are both still recovering from injuries. However, Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri, who has been linked with a move to Stoke, was spotted in the crowd at the Britannia today, leading to further speculation that a deal is close to being made. While Hughes didn’t comment on the Shaqiri sighting, the move seems much more likely now and would be massive for the club.
