Neymar to miss up to three matches for Barcelona with… the mumps

Despite having been vaccinated, Neymar is going to miss at least two weeks with the mumps.

In a bizarre story, the Barcelona striker is in danger of missing the Blaugranas‘ La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao after contracting the mumps, which causes painful swelling in the neck amongst its symptoms.

Most developed nations have mumps on their immunization requirements, usually in the form of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, and Brazil is no exception. Barca’s doctors says Neymar was vaccinated.

Neymar, 23, will miss the European Super Cup on Tuesday vs. Sevilla, and both legs of the Spanish Super Cup vs. Athletic Bilbao. He scored 39 goals last season, including 10 in Barcelona’s run to the UEFA Champions League title.

What does this mean for Tuesday? Luis Enrique is bringing his whole squad to Georgia for the Sevilla match, and can use Pedro, Sandro or Munir El Haddadi next to Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Get well soon, Neymar.
