After finishing in second place in the Premier League last season, Manchester City has started the new campaign flying high with two 3-0 wins, including a massive victory over defending champions Chelsea today.
Manuel Pellegrini and his men have taken a lot of criticism for their play last season and many questioned if they would be able to compete for the title this season. After their win today, the City boss believes his team’s consistency led to all three points, and that their struggles last season have given them an added desire to reclaim the title.
I think that today we played a complete game, not only because we scored three goals. I think that in the first 45 minutes we could have scored at least three goals more.
We were a very consistent team. We continued playing the way I like this team to play, always an attacking system, always trying to score more goals…
I know these players, and they are hungry and angry. What happened last season maybe was a good experience.”
Through two matches, the biggest improvements have been seen in Yaya Toure and captain Vincent Kompany. Kompany came under fire last season for his poor form, and has responded by leading the back-line to two clean sheets while also chipping in offensively with goals in both matches. Toure has been great playing as a box-to-box midfielder, looking strong both on and off the ball.
Pellegrini seems to have his side firing on all cylinders, and although still very early in the season, City looks very scary.
