Mauricio Pochettino “angry, disappointed” as Tottenham Hotspur blow another lead

For the second week running Tottenham Hotspur squandered a late on and their manager Mauricio Pochettino is not a happy bunny.

After an end-to-end encounter, Spurs led in the 80th minute when Dele Alli jumped off the bench to score his first Premier League goal, and the 19 year old’s first strike for Spurs. However, Tottenham’s defense switched off and allowed Riyad Mahrez to wriggle in from the right flank and curl a beauty home to split the points.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Pochettino revealed he was not happy with the way Spurs have up their lead.

“It was 50/50, a very difficult game for both teams. Second half we played much better,” Pochettino said. “I am disappointed with the draw. Last game against Stoke we lost a 2-0 lead and we did it again. We deserved more again but it is a shame. I am angry and disappointed, not frustrated. The mistake we made today is difficult to explain.”

Spurs’ players will be feeling like a high school kid who has just been summoned to the dining room by their parents after doing something wrong: “we are not angry, we are just disappointed.” Oh man, that’s the worst.

With just two points from three games so far this season, Tottenham’s start leaves a lot to be desired in what is a big second year at the helm for Pochettino.

One thing from watching this game is clear, leading man Harry Kane needs help in attack, and fast, if Spurs are going to seriously challenge for a top four spot this season. After having a bid turned down for Saido Berahino this week, Pochettino will be eager to improve that offer or look elsewhere to find the solutions to kill the game off when Spurs go ahead.

In fairness Christian Eriksen was missing for Tottenham through injury and that hurt their offensive creativity, but perhaps another slack display at the back is what really upset Pochettino. It’s still early days but Pochettino’s side must improve at both ends of the pitch
