Ashley Cole was not included in Roma’s Champions League squad released today, yet another step in his likely departure from the Italian squad.
The 34-year-old English defender moved to Roma last summer on a free transfer from Chelsea and began the 2014/15 season as a starter, but he made just three Serie A appearances in the six months of the season and has been quickly scrubbed from the team in the past few weeks.
He was initially included on the official website’s team roster with the number 0 but has recently been removed altogether. He was not in the squad for either of Roma’s first two league matches, and now was not listed in the 23-man Champions League roster. The club signed 22-year-old Frenchman Lucas Digne on loan from Paris Saint-Germain to play left-back, and he played the full 90 minutes in his club debut, a 2-1 win over defending champions Juventus.
Reports from Italy publication Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that Cole had the chance to leave Italy this summer as Newcastle apparently made a move to reunite Cole with former England manager Steve McClaren, but Cole said no.
