Arsenal’s striker fears grow: Danny Welbeck has surgery, out long-term

Oh, Arsene Wenger… why didn’t you buy another striker in the summer transfer window?

On Thursday Arsenal released a statement confirming that striker Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his troublesome left knee and the England international will be out for “a period of months” with the ailment he suffered in April earlier this year.

Welbeck, 24, arrived at the Gunners from Manchester United on Deadline Day in 2014, but has never really got going at the Emirates Stadium (eight goals in 34 games during his debut season backs that up) with injuries like this plaguing his time in north London so far. His injury now leaves only Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott as Arsenal’s only two senior strikers, with Joel Campbell still around too. Youngsters Yaya Sanogo and Chuba Akpom are out on loan and as for Walcott, he’s usually a winger.

Many Arsenal fans lambasted Wenger for not spending big on a top striker this summer — hence why they received a disgraceful mark in our transfer window grades too — but the Arsenal manager has since come out and pleaded his innocence, claiming that no players of real quality were available for the Gunners to buy.

Here is the release from Arsenal in full, as they will be without Welbeck for quite some time and the burden is now all on Giroud and Walcott after an edgy start to the season which has seen them take seven points from their opening four games.

Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work.

The striker has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April.

It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.

Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well.
