The U.S. went down 1-0 early against Peru and it was a pretty fortuitous goal to concede.

If you take a first glance at the video below, you’ll probably agree and shrug it off as a slice of bad luck which went in Peru’s favor as Daniel Chavez scored his first international via a huge deflection off Omar Gonzalez.
But when you break it down, what was Gonzalez doing?
When Chavez picked the ball up just over 20-yards out, the LA Galaxy defender mysteriously started back-peddling and then turned his back when the shot came in. That led to the ball striking his back and looping high in the air and beating Brad Guzan.
Take a look for yourself in the video below to see if Gonzalez is to blame or this was just a slice of bad luck. Either way, Gonzalez was subbed out at half time by Jurgen Klinsmann.
