The Blues ‘keeper, 23, has only just returned from a one-game suspension after being sent off on the opening day of the season against Swansea City, but reports from numerous outlets in the UK claim that Courtois injured his knee in training on Wednesday and is being assessed ahead of the tricky trip to Goodison Park.

Despite selling Petr Cech to Arsenal this summer, Chelsea still have an able deputy to Courtois in Asmir Begovic — he proved as much with a fine display against Manchester City, despite Chelsea being hammered 3-0 by the Citizens in Week 2 of the current campaign — but losing the Belgian superstar would no doubt be a blow to Jose Mourinho’s beleaguered backline.

Courtois saved a penalty kick in Chelsea’s first, and only, win of the PL season, a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Aug. 22, but the Blues have shipped nine goals in their opening four games of the season as their trademark defensive solidity has evaded them early on.

The defending champions only conceded 32 times en-route to winning the title last season but with John Terry and Courtois already getting red cards this season, plus Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic putting in poor displays, the Blues could use some continuity on the backline and Courtois definitely provides that.

If he does miss out, can Begovic step up to the plate?
