Carroll could return for West Ham against Newcastle

When West Ham takes the field on Monday, Slaven Bilic’s side could be getting a big boost…literally.

Andy Carroll is set to make his return to the Hammers for the first time since last February, when he tore ligaments in his knee and was forced to undergo surgery. On Monday, the big striker will likely be on the bench for West Ham, and could come on to face his boyhood club Newcastle (Watch live, 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN and online via Live Extra).

Hammers’ boss Slaven Bilic said Caroll has looked good in his six weeks of training, and is ready for a return to Premier League action.

It is a new Andy Carroll now. Six weeks of hard training, he is always smiling and working hard.

It is almost like signing a new player. I am tempted to play him, against his home team. It is a special game.

Carroll is a classic center-forward; big, strong, and dominant in the air with a nose for the goal. However, injuries have constantly haunted the striker as he has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career.

After breaking through for Newcastle as a 17-year-old, Carroll was eventually sold to Liverpool in 2011 for the highest transfer fee ever for a British player at the time. However, he failed to live up to the high expectations at Anfield and was soon sold to West Ham.

West Ham has had an interesting start to the season, with two wins and two losses. The wins were massive upsets on the road against Arsenal and Liverpool, which sent shockwaves through the league. However, the Hammers have lost both of their matches at home, against Leicester City and Bournemouth.

With Newcastle still winless through four matches, tomorrow’s match is a big opportunity for West Ham to get some points in front of the home support. If Carroll plays he will get a great applause from the Upton Park faithful, and marking his return with a goal against his boyhood club would be icing on the cake.
