The summer transfer window just closed on September 1, but Newcastle boss Steve McClaren is already looking ahead to January.
That’s when the winter window opens, and McClaren has his sights set on Queens Park Rangers’ striker Charlie Austin.

After scoring 18 goals in the Premier League last season for QPR, Austin was linked with a move to Tyneside this summer, but the striker remained at Loftus Road. Through six games in the Championship this season, Austin has scored five goals.
Newcastle is yet to win a game in the PL this season, and McClaren said he’ll be keeping a close eye on Austin.
He’s been on the radar here from the second half of last season, stayed on it during the summer and he will still be on the radar in January. Definitely.
Papiss Cisse scored 11 goals in 22 matches last season, but is rumored to be unhappy at Newcastle and was linked with a move away from the club over the summer, although a deal was never made. Summer signing Aleksandar Mitrovic has shown he may not be ready to be the team’s top choice striker, after receiving two yellows cards and a red card in four matches with the club.
Austin is a proven goalscorer and the fact that he remained at QPR over the summer surprised many. However, with EURO 2016 coming up next summer and Austin keen to find a place on the England squad, a January transfer back to the top flight may be his only choice.
