UEL roundup: Liverpool draw in France, Spurs win

A roundup of Thursday’s action in UEFA Europa League group stage action:

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Qarabag FK

Tottenham came from behind, overcoming a 7th-minute deficit courtesy a penalty given away by Kieran Trippier, to defeat Qarabag, the reigning Azerbaijani champions, 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

Summer signing Son Heung-min ($30 million) made his home debut for Spurs and bagged a first-half brace top mark the occasion. Son, criminally unmarked at the top of the six-yard box, turned home Andros Townsend‘s corner kick in the 28th minute to pull Spurs level. The 23-year-old South Korean international put Spurs into the lead with his second goal in as many minutes, capping off a brilliant piece of creativity and dribbling from Dele Alli.

Erik Lamela complete the scoring for Spurs with a smooth, dinked finish over the goalkeeper in the 86th minute. Harry Kane won the ball back deep inside Qarabag’s half, played Lamela through and the Argentine midfielder did well to commit the goalkeeper to ground and lift the ball over top of him.

Bordeaux 1-1 Liverpool

Adam Lallana did his best Anthony Martial impression (below video) to give Liverpool a late lead, in the 65th minute. The Reds midfielder nutmegged Bordeaux defender Pablo at the edge of the 18-yard box and curled a low, bouncing effort inside the far post, not unlike the Manchester United striker’s rendition of Thierry Henry’s trademark style.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side nearly got out of France with three points on the opening day of the group stage, but Bordeaux midfielder Jussie’s right-footed shot into the roof of Simon Mignolet‘s goal capped off a period of inspired juggling and shambolic defending.

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Krasnodar

Dortmund got off to a mighty slow start at home, against Russian side Krasnodar. Pavel Mamaev put the visitors a goal ahead in the 15th minute. Matthias Ginter headed home Joo-Ho Park’s corner kick just after the halftime restart, and Ginter returned the favor in the form of a delightful cross to the South Korean international in the 91st minute.
