Perfect is not a word to be thrown around lightly, but that’s exactly what Borussia Dortmund are.
A season after facing legitimate relegation fears, Borussia Dortmund has won every single game this season across all competitions, and look impressive doing so.
They remained that way today with a 3-0 clobbering of Champions League side Bayer Leverkusen thanks to goals from Shinji Kagawa, Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang, and Jonas Hofmann. This gives them 11 wins in 11 across all competitions, including five in five in Bundesliga play.
What Dortmund is doing is truly astounding, especially given how last year went. In the previous campaign, they didn’t get their fifth league win until February 2nd. They didn’t get their 11th win of the year until mid-December.
What’s also incredible is how dominant they’ve been. They’ve outscored opponents 37-9, including 18-3 in Bundesliga play. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been stellar after struggling the last two years with injuries that likely derailed transfers away from Westfalenstadion. Aubemayang has five league goals already, ahead of Mkhitarayn’s three. Marco Reus looks unfazed by ankle injuries. Shinji Kagawa appears revived from his Premier League failures. Roman Weidenfeller and Mats Hummels still appear below their former levels, but it clearly hasn’t hurt the team so far.
Manager Tom Teuchel has been a revelation for a club that was reeling at the biggest casualty of last season’s struggles, fan favorite manager Jurgen Klopp. What Tuchel has done at the helm of Dortmund is remarkable, and it doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.
Their current form is unsustainable, obviously, but that doesn’t diminish what they’ve done. Look out, Germany. Look out, Europe. Borussia Dortmund is back.
