What’s the key to being a winning football manager? According to Sir Alex Ferguson, you’d be wise to start by “winning” your press conferences.

How does one go about “winning” a press conference? Perhaps part of the genius of Ferguson, notoriously the master of mind games during his legendary 26-year tenure at Manchester United, is that only he knows.

Ferguson, who has another new book hitting shelves on Tuesday, Sept. 22, summing up the importance of press conferences, from the Evening Standard:

“For a manager, no matter the result, at a press conference you need to come out as the winner.

“One of my hobbies now is to watch press conferences. You can kill yourself in a press conference. It’s an important part of your job.”

Ferguson was always accused of using his pre- and post-game press conferences to intimidate match referees to the point of giving favorable decisions to Man United, though he was perhaps most famous for his ongoing public feuds with some of the world’s other top managers.

Ferguson probably still holds the title of most-fined and most-suspended manager in Premier League history, but he also lifted the PL trophy 13 times in 21 tries, so however you spin it, he always “won” in his mind.
