Speaking at an event in Manchester on Friday to promote his new book “Leading”, Ferguson, 74, spoke about a variety of topics regarding United as he praised the composure of young striker Anthony Martial, plus talked about DDG’s importance to the Red Devils as they aim to stay hot on the heels of Manchester City in the early weeks of the season.
If United beat Sunderland on Saturday (Watch live, 10 a.m. ET on NBCSN and online via Live Extra) they will have won five of their opening seven games of the season under Louis Van Gaal.
Here’s what Fergie had to say about his beloved club.
“I think De Gea can actually win us the league,” Ferguson said. “We are second in the league. We are in a good position because, (leaders Manchester) City hadn’t lost a game until last week and then United won at Southampton and the whole thing changes round. Chelsea have lost a couple of games, Arsenal have lost a game, if you are there around New Year’s Day then they will have a good chance.”
If anybody knows about a team’s legitimacy to win a title, it’s Ferguson. The legendary Scottish manager won 13 PL titles in 26 years in charge at Old Trafford and although he may be looking at this situation through rose-tinted spectacles, the fact that he’s talking about United’s title credentials surely shows the Red Devils are making progress under Van Gaal.
So, what do you think? Are United legit title contenders or is Fergie getting ahead of himself?
