Arsenal’s start to the Champions League campaign has gotten off to a brutal start, losing to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos in Group F play.

Through two matches, the Gunners have zero points and sit at the bottom of the group, as their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds have taken a huge blow.

While it’s still possible for Arsenal to advance, there’s now a real shot they are eliminated in the group stage, something that hasn’t happened to Arsene Wenger‘s side since the 2002-03 season.

Not only has Arsenal started off with two losses, they have yet to play the top team in Group F, Bayern Munich.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb and 3-2 to Olympiacos, while Bayern has cruised to 3-0 and 5-0 wins over those two sides, respectively.

Arsenal’s next two matches in group play are both against Bayern, one of the most dominant teams throughout Europe. Bayern has advanced to at least the semifinals of the Champions League in five of the past six seasons, capturing the title in 2013. The German giants have also eliminated Arsenal from the UCL in two of the past three seasons.

With the form that Bayern is currently in, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think Pep Guardiola’s side could beat Arsenal in both of their upcoming matches. If that were to happen, Arsenal would have four losses out of four, which would nearly guarantee elimination.

Bayern Munich is the clear favorite in this group, and many expected Arsenal to take care of business in the opening matches against Zagreb and Olympiacos. However, the Gunners have now put themselves in a situation where they are in desperate need of a result against one of the best teams in the world.

There are still four more matches to play and anything is possible in the wild world of Champions League football, but Arsenal have dug themselves in quite a deep hole. Now they need to find a way out.
