Louis Van Gaal still plans on leaving Manchester United after the 2017 season, mostly because his wife says so.

The wife of the Red Devils skipper is ready to retire to their place in Portugal, and Van Gaal’s contract expires in 2017.

Here’s what may get in the way of that, though: LVG wants to get to the UEFA Champions League final by then, and a loss to Wolfsburg on Wednesday would put the Red Devils on the brink of a group stage exit.

From the BBC:

“Normally I shall leave after next year, but what is normal in our football world you never know. I promised my wife I would go to our paradise in Portugal. It will be very hard to deny her that promise. It shall be very hard to my wife.”

And on getting to the final, from The Mirror:

“It is realistic. Reaching the final is an aim. Winning the final is a little bit of luck.”

LVG turned 64 at the start of the Premier League season, and will be 65 at the end of the 2016-17 season. Would you guess he has interest in sticking around longer if he doesn’t make his goal of a UCL final?
