UEL roundup: Liverpool, Spurs lose early leads, draw

A roundup of Thursday’s UEFA Europa League group stage action:

Liverpool 1-1 FC Sion

Liverpool were the rare English side to start quickly in Europe this week, as Adam Lallana put the Reds ahead in the 4th minute (below video). Divock Origi charged to the endline down the right side of attack and cut the ball back to Lallana eight yards out. Lallana used the inside of his right foot to pass the ball into the back of the net. The lead was short-lived, however, as Ebenezer Assifuah equalized for the Swiss side in the 18th minute. A disappointing result for Liverpool overall, as they both squandered a number of chances to win the game late on and allowed Sion a pair of quality chances at the same fate.

AS Monaco 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Erik Lamela gave Tottenahm a 1-0 lead (35th minute — below video) when he slotted home the rebound from Dele Alli‘s saved attempt on goal, and the Premier League side looked close to getting out of France with three points from a professional, disciplined performance. Stephan El Shaarawy headed the ball past the outstretched foot of Hugo Llrois in the 81st minute, though, to draw 1-1 and earn Monaco’s second point in Group J. Spurs sit top of the group with four points from two games.

PAOK 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund, who entered the day top of Group C, still reign supreme despite a 1-1 draw away to Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki. BVB went a goal down in the 34th minute, but earned their point when Gonzalo Castro’s chipped through ball wrong-footed the PAOK goalkeeper and found the back of the net in the 72nd minute.
