DeAndre Yedlin is set to start his first Premier League game as Sunderland face West Ham United on Saturday (Watch live, 10 a.m. ET on USA Network and online via Live Extra) at the Stadium of Light.

A report from the Sunderland Echo suggests that Patrick Van Aanholt — who has made several high-profile mistakes already this season — will be replaced by Yedlin at left back. A ProSoccerTalk source has also indicated that Yedlin is due to start against the Hammers, as Sunderland is still searching for its first win of the season with the Black Cats propping up the table.

Yedlin, 22, has only made one previous appearance in the PL which came during the 2014-15 season. He came on as a late substitute for Tottenham Hotspur against Aston Villa on April 11, but with Spurs well stocked in the full back ranks he was sent out on a season-long loan to Sunderland.

The former Seattle Sounders star has found minutes hard to come by in England thus far, but did lay on an assist for Dick Advocaat’s side in their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup on Sept. 22.

Ahead of the USA’s big game against Mexico at the Rose Bowl next weekend, Jurgen Klinsmann will be watching the young full back closely even if he does line up in an unfamiliar position at left back.

Yedlin’s pace has seen him used as a winger in recent U.S. national team games but with the USA struggling for full backs due to injuries, Yedlin could well revert to the position where he made his name in Major League Soccer.
