It hardly could’ve gone worse for Argentina in its CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying opener.
Missing Lionel Messi already, the South American power watched as Sergio Aguero was stretchered off after less than a half-hour with a hamstring injury.
Aguero was said to be in tears after the match, which Argentina lost 2-0 to Ecuador.
Argentina boss Gerardo Martino said later: “He had been carrying a knock with his club, during the week we took good care of him. He was moving around the pitch well, but unfortunately he felt some discomfort and we are going to lose him.
“I haven’t spoken to the doctor but I can confirm the injury is not the same as the one he had been carrying with his club.”
Aguero doesn’t have the best fortune when it comes to injuries, coming off a 5-goal explosion in a trouncing of Newcastle United. While we wait out whether he’ll miss just one game for Argentina or much longer for club and country, let’s hope we won’t be deprived of watching one of the world’s best for too long.
