Catching up with CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying: Brazil, Argentina hoping to bounce back

World Cup qualifying in South America has already begun, and there were some shocking results in the opening matchday a few days ago.

Both Argentina and Brazil took an opening round defeat, and they will look to come back from those early losses to push back up the table.

Without the injured Lionel Messi, Argentina suffered the most shocking scoreline, a 2-0 loss to Ecuador in Buenos Aires on Thursday thanks to a pair of goals inside the final 10 minutes, with Frickson Erazo hitting home the first in the 80th minute and Felipe Caicedo doubling the lead a minute later.

With Messi sidelined, Sergio Aguero started but left injured, replaced by Carlos Tevez. The Boca Juniors frontman looks likely to start on Tuesday as Gerardo Martino’s squad travels to Paraguay. “The qualifiers are different and it became clear on Thursday that they are harder than a Copa America match or a friendly,” said Tevez. Paraguay grabbed a 1-0 win over Venezuela in the opening round on a late goal by Derlis Gonzalez.

Another top team fell victim in Santiago as Chile beat Brazil 2-0 on Thursday. Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez struck in the final fifteen minutes as the Chileans carried over their Copa America success to the start of World Cup qualifying.

Brazil will now return home to Fortaleza to entertain Venezuela on Tuesday with both teams looking for their first points of the cycle.

One intriguing matchup on Tuesday is Uruguay and Colombia. With both teams picking up three points first time out, and both sides figuring to be contenders at the top of the table, both will want to jump out early. James Rodriguez is sidelined with an injury for Colombia, while Uruguay is without manager Oscar Tabarez who is serving a touchline ban from the Copa America.
