It started in the 96th minute, when Oribe Peralta put Mexico ahead 2-1. Paul Aguilar took a long ball over the top and got enough on his cross, as Peralta found some space in between the U.S. defense and buried his shot.
Then, Bobby Wood came on to replace Jozy Altidore and made an immediate impact, as the Hawaiian-born striker scored an equalizer in the 108th minute. It was another substitute DeAndre Yedlin playing a perfect ball to Wood, who cooly slotted it home through the keeper’s legs to make it 2-2.
When everyone thought the match was headed to a penalty shootout, Paul Aguilar broke American hearts with a winner for Mexico in the 118th minute. Raul Jimenez looped a high ball into the box, where Aguilar rifled a beautiful volley into the side netting.
A brutal loss for the United States, a thrilling win for Mexico.
