Eden Hazard returned to the starting lineup after being benched over the weekend, and nearly opened the scoring early in the match. In the 9th minute, Hazard took a ball in the box from Cesc Fabregas, cut onto his right foot and bent a shot on goal, only to be rejected by the far post.

Fabregas then had a penalty shout, as it looked like he was taken down by two defenders in the box. However, the referee turned his head as Chelsea had to fight on.

Ten minutes later, Willian came close to scoring another one of his signature free-kicks. As he’s done so often this season, the Brazilian whipped in a free kick towards the back post, needing just the slightest touch to beat the keeper. However, a sprawling Diego Costa couldn’t redirect Willian’s cross as the match remained scoreless.

Dynamo’s only dangerous chance in the first half came in the 27th minute when Vitaliy Buyalskyi’s long-range effort looked headed for the top corner, but was deflected wide by John Terry.

After the break, it was another Willian free-kick that nearly put Chelsea ahead. This time from a more central position, Willian bent his shot up and over the wall, only to hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounce out. For the second time, Dynamo was saved by the woodwork.

While it looked like Chelsea would continue to press for the opening goal, Kiev got their feet under them and started to gain some momentum on the attack. Led by Derlis Gonzalez and Andriy Yarmolenko, the home-side forced Asmir Begovic to make a few key saves for Chelsea. Yarmolenko has been brilliant for Kiev this season, and has recently been linked with a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea regained possession in the final minutes of the match, but couldn’t find that crucial goal as the match ended a scoreless draw.
