Sturridge, 26, only returned from injury in the final week of Brendan Rodgers time in charge at Anfield, as he was out for most of the last 12 months with reoccurring thigh and hip injuries. Sturridge scored twice against Aston Villa in a 3-2 win earlier this month and looked to be back to his best.

However, in one of Klopp’s first training sessions at Melwood the England international suffered a knee injury and now he’s a big doubt for this weekend.

“We have to see day-by-day. If he can train tomorrow he’s an option. He will have more treatment today because there is still some fluid on his knee,” Klopp said. “I’m not sure in this moment if we will play two strikers on Sunday but it’s an option for the future.”

Klopp also revealed that Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino will be available to play a big role against Saints during his Premier League debut at Anfield on Sunday, with the duo both returning from injury on Thursday as they jumped off the bench to contribute in Liverpool’s slightly disappointing 1-1 home draw against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.

With two draws from his opening two games in charge, there have been plenty of positives for Klopp as his side look well-organized and the work he has done on the training ground over the past 10 days already seems to be having an impact.

However, with Sturridge struggling, Danny Ings likely out for the season and Benteke and Firmino not starting a game since September, Klopp has some issues with his offense which may make his start to life at Liverpool a little tougher than he anticipated.
