While Sunday’s match is not only massive in terms of bragging rights in Manchester, it is also important for the standings, as City sits at top of the table two points ahead of United.

Van Gaal always seems to exude confidence in his side, but this weekend, he believes City are the favorites.

When you look at the facts, they are first and we are third.

There’s goal difference, points difference – they are first, so they are the favorites I think.

We have one day less [to prepare than Manchester City] but we have to do it and that’s what we’re doing. We hope we can beat City.

United’s long trip to Moscow in the Champions League could have taken a toll on the players, but Van Gaal has a healthy squad to choose from, with Ashley Young the only regular to miss out. This could be the perfect opportunity to take points from Manchester City, who will be without top attackers Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

A win for Louis van Gaal would see United jump City in the standings, and would be a massive confidence boost for the side moving forward. After this weekend, United doesn’t have the toughest schedule on the horizon, as they will be keen to make a big run before Christmas.

With the next Manchester derby not until late March, a win for the “underdogs” could prove massive for Van Gaal’s men.
