Manchester United were sniffing around Southampton’s Sadio Mane during the closing stages of the summer transfer window and now Louis Van Gaal may be regretting not snapping up the Senegalese forward when he had the chance.
True, Saints were unwilling to let Mane leave, but every player has his price, and Mane’s has sky-rocketed according to reports.

Mane, 23, has enjoyed a superb start to the season for Ronald Koeman‘s side and recently displayed all of his best qualities as he single-handedly ripped apart Chelsea with an assist and a goal as Saints beat the reigning Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge. Displays like that have seen is name continued to be linked with a big money move to some of the PL’s giants, and Koeman hardly dampened the prospect of Mane leaving St Mary’s as he told Saints fans to “enjoy him while you can.”
Talk of Mane leaving Saints in the summer was real, as United were said to have been willing to pay $30 million after the former Red Bull Salzburg star scored 10 times — including the fastest hat trick in PL record — in his debut season in England’s top-flight during the 2014-15 campaign.
However, the Daily Telegraph is now reporting that if United, or anybody else for that matter, wants to sign Mane, they will have to stump up at least $55 million and probably closer to $60 million to sign Mane.

To put that into context, Saints signed Mane from Salzburg for $18 million on transfer deadline day on Sept. 1, 2014. So, in just over a year his value has more than trebled as he’s become a key cog in Saints’ attack with his pace complimenting Graziano Pelle‘s power and Dusan Tadic‘s trickery superbly. Southampton will be reluctant to let Mane go, hence why they’ve now slapped this incredible pricetag on his head, but if anyone comes in with that cash everyone will be happy.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has said that United will continue to spend big as they assemble a squad able to challenge for the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Would $60 million for Mane be a good move for United?
