MLS Snapshot: NYCFC 1-3 New England Revolution

The game in 100 words (or less): The New England Revolution are headed to the playoffs thanks to a 3-1 win over New York City FC on Deadline Day. Needing just a point to clinch a berth, the Revs got on the board in the opening minutes and didn’t look back, cruising to an easy win at Yankee Stadium. With the three points and other results from around the conference, New England will head into the postseason as the fifth-seeded team in the East. For NYCFC, the club finishes it’s inaugural season eighth in the East with 37 points.

Three moments that mattered

2′ — Nguyen gives New England an immediate lead — The Revs got off to a quick start as Lee Nguyen put the visitors ahead within the opening minutes. Charlie Davies did well to hold off his defender and played the ball back to Nguyen, who made one cut and put it in the back of the net.

38′ — Davies makes it 2-0 Revolution — Charlie Davies doubled New England’s lead with a strong individual effort. Davies outmuscled his defender and put a nice left-footed shot past Josh Saunders in goal to push the Revs closer to the postseason.

55′ — Rowe heads home to make it 3-0 — Kelyn Rowe sealed a berth in the postseason with New England’s third goal of the match. Rowe moved in unmarked on a corner kick and headed home from the near post as the Revs continued to cruise.
