Well, Rooney and his brothers did have plenty of experience in the ring in Liverpool as youngsters and that work paid off in Manchester on Monday as he slapped WWE star Wade Barrett to bring the house down.

Rooney, 30, attended the WWE event at the Manchester Arena with his sons, current Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs and former United teammate and now West Brom captain Darren Fletcher.

Okay, it was all scripted (if you didn’t know that, sorry to let that cat out of the bag), but still, Rooney played his part and the fans loved every single second of it as he was confronted ringside and Gary Neville’s name came up as he was insulted by the wrestlers before lashing out to help Cesaro win.

With the international break in full flow and England playing Spain in a friendly on Friday in Alicante, it was good to see the English national team captain having a bit of laugh amid his poor goalscoring form for the Red Devils (2 in 11 Premier League games) so far this season.
