Arsene Wenger lamented Arsenal for “being too sure of ourselves” after going 1-0 up away at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, as the Gunners ended up losing 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Wenger, 66, watched on as Olivier Giroud put his side ahead but a goal from James Morrison and an own goal courtesy of a mix up between Petr Cech and Mikel Arteta left the French manager fuming.

“Maybe we were a bit too sure of ourselves,” Wenger said. “Overall it was a bad day. We scored an own goal, missed a penalty and missed a lot of chances. It is very disappointing.”

True, the Gunners did squander chances but lady luck didn’t appear to be shinning down on them as first Francis Coquelin had to be subbed out with a serious looking right knee injury and then his replacement, Arteta, had to come off in the second half with a muscular injury. Wenger is concerned that Coquelin’s injury is serious but has no idea how long his French midfielder will be out for, while Arteta is not expected to be out for long.
