La Liga & Serie A: Atleti top in Madrid; Inter stay top in Italy

A roundup of all of Sunday’s action in Spain and Italy’s top flights:

Real Betis 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid capitalized on their capital neighbors’ humiliating defeat at the hands of Barcelona on Saturday with a 1-0 away victory over Real Betis on Sunday, pushing Los Rojiblancos (26 points) two points clear of Los Merengues, and into second in the league table. Koke scored the game’s only goal when he hit home the rebound from Fernando Torres’s initial effort, which was saved.

Villarreal 1-1 Eibar

Villarreal missed their chance to go fourth in La Liga (final UEFA Champions League place) when they drew at home against a 10-man Eibar side 24 hours after fourth-place Celta Vigo lost away to Deportivo La Coruna for their second straight defeat. Sergi Enrich put Sunday’s visitors on top after 27 minutes, but Jaume Costa equalized for Villarreal in the 85th minute, rescuing a point and keeping Eibar a point behind in sixth.

Inter Milan 4-0 Frosinone

Inter Milan remained top of Serie A with a 4-0 hammering of newly promoted Frosinone. Jonathan Biabiany put the hosts on the board in the 29th minute, Mauro Icardi doubled the lead on 53 minutes, Jeison Murillo made it 3-0 on 87 minutes, and Marcelo Brozovic applied the emphatic exclamation point in the 91st minute. Roberto Mancini’s side (30 points) currently sits two points clear of second- and third-place Napoli and Fiorentina respectively.

Hellas Verona 0-2 Napoli

Napoli left it late, but did just enough to (briefly) go top of the league after taking all three points in the day’s first game. Lorenzo Insigne (67 minute) and Gonzalo Higuain (73rd) provided the late double, which puts Maurizio Sarri’s side (28 points) second behind Inter, ahead of Fiorentina on goal differential.

Fiorentina 2-2 Empoli

Slowly but surely, Fiorentina’s early-season title challenge is beginning to come undone. Back to back defeats to Napoli and Roma earlier this month knocked the Viola from the top spot, and Sunday’s home draw with Empoli sees Paulo Sousa’s side slip all the way to third. Nikola Kalinic bagged a second-half brace (56th and 61st minutes) to erase a two-goal, first-half deficit.
