Gerrard to play for Liverpool again — LFC Legends, that is

Steven Gerrard will play in the red shirt of Liverpool once again this January, after all — just not at Anfield, or anywhere in England or Europe for the matter.

It’s not the Liverpool first team for which Gerrard will play on Jan. 7 — instead he’ll represent his boyhood club as a member of the Liveprool Legends in an exhibition against the Australian Legends side set to feature Brett Emerton, Tony Popovic and Mark Bosnich.

Among other Reds legends — the full roster will be announced in the coming weeks — Gerrard will play alongside the likes of Jamie Carragher, Ian Rush, Dietmar Hamann and John Arne Riise. Gerard Houllier, who managed the club for six seasons (1998-2004) and won an FA Cup, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) during his time at Anfield, will lead the Liverpool Legends side.

“It will be great to play with the official Liverpool FC Legends,” Gerrard told LiverpoolFC.com. “The squad looks like it’s a great set of lads, it’ll be good to get on the pitch with them. Our fans are the best and to play in front of them again will be emotional, I’m sure.”
