I hope that headline isn’t too vague.
The UEFA Champions League’s group stage has two Match Days remaining, and Premier League teams are in various stages of confidence.
Here’s what can happen today for PL clubs.
Already through: Manchester City has advanced to the knockout rounds, and is playing for the right to be a seeded team in the group. That could be determined as soon as Wednesday, when the PL side visits Turin. Juventus is a point behind their visitors, and can join City in the knockout rounds with a point.
Alive for group title: A win today in Israel keeps Chelsea playing for the group’s top spot. If a Porto win over Dynamo Kyiv joins that result, Chelsea is through to the knockout rounds.
Could win group. Could also finish last in group: Manchester United leads Group B with 7 points, with a pair of teams on 6 points and bottom-feeders CSKA Moscow on four points. That means pretty much any table order could result from the next two match days.
United can go a long way toward advancing with a win over visiting PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, and would be through if that win is joined by a CSKA draw with Wolfsburg in Moscow. A loss to PSV triggers all sorts of scenarios for United, but the Red Devils would still be in good shape to advance with a final day win at Wolfsburg.
Perfection required… and help: Arsenal’s unlikely splitting of points with Bayern Munich means their colossal screw-ups to open group play haven’t completely condemned the Gunners, but it’s close. In the likeliest scenario, Arsene Wenger‘s bunch needs to beat visiting Dinamo Zagreb today, and hope Bayern Munich beats Olympiakos. Then, the Gunners need to beat Olympiakos by a two-goal margin — or win with four road goals — on Dec. 9 in Greece. A draw between Bayern and Olympiakos today makes the Arsenal-Zagreb result moot.
