Villa were second best for most of the game but hit Saints just before half time when Lescott scored from a set piece. Romeu jumped off the bench to do the same with 20 minutes to go and make it 1-1 but Saints squandered several chances and are now winless in four.
With the point Saints move to 21 points for the season, while Remi Garde’s Villa still sit bottom of the table with six points.

Saints started brightly with Mane spinning his marker and slotting to Tadic who smashed over from the edge of the box with, then seconds later Tadic’s cross found Pelle in a great position but his effort after sliding in soared over the bar.

Mane’s pace was causing Villa plenty of problems and the Senegalese attacker blazed a shot over from the edge of the box. Jose Fonte then scuffed a shot towards goal which Rudy Gestede cleared off the line and from the resulting corner Mane headed the ball over from two-yards out.
Gestede then lashed wildly at a Jordan Veretout cross at the other end in a rare attack for Villa, while Pelle sent a tame header on goal which USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved easily. Somehow Villa went in ahead at the break with James Ward-Prowse failing to clear a low corner and Lescott stole in at the back post to tap home. 1-0 to the visitors.

At the start of the second half Saints looked lively once more with Mane’s shot deflecting inches wide of Guzan’s post. Alan Hutton then blocked Steven Davis‘ goal-bound effort heroically as Saints through everything at the Villa goal, which eventually paid off.

Substitute Romeu prodded home Ward-Prowse’s in-swinging corner at the back post to make it 1-1 with 20 minutes to go and set up a grandstand finish. Shane Long, Pelle and others went close but Saints couldn’t find another goal and had to settle for a point, something Villa were much happier with than Ronald Koeman‘s outfit.
