Things couldn’t be going better for Liverpool. Things couldn’t be going worse for Newcastle.
That’s the feeling around St. James Park as the Magpies welcome the Reds live at 11am E.T. live on NBCSN or live online at NBC Sports Live Extra.
Liverpool is firing on all cylinders under Jurgen Klopp and has a chance to bang out its fifth win in a row across all competitions, and its fourth Premier League win in its last five tries. Despite missing Philippe Coutinho, a 6-1 demolition of Southampton midweek in the League Cup has the Reds riding high into their trip to the Midlands.
The Brazilian remains out today as he recovers from a hamstring injury, but Daniel Sturridge is back firing. Sturridge started midweek against Southampton, but he begins today’s match on the bench with Christian Benteke up front. The England international figures to make an appearance today having scored a pair on Wednesday.
Jordan Henderson doesn’t return to the starting lineup just yet having played 26 minutes the last time out against Swansea plus 16 minutes in the midweek victory. Missing from the squad is Emre Can who is suspended for yellow card accumulation, a big loss for the Reds as one of the club’s most consistent performers, and Joe Allen is in his place. Overall, Klopp rings six changes from the roaring win midweek, notably with Jordan Ibe and Roberto Firmino into the starting lineup for Divock Origi and Adam Lallana.
Meanwhile, for Newcastle, Cheick Tiote is still out of the squad with a groin injury. He missed the 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last week, and today misses his fifth match of the season due to injury. Defender Mark Williamson, recalled just five days ago from his loan spell at Wolverhampton thanks to an injury to Jamaal Lescales, is out with a hamstring problem suffered in training.
Newcastle manager Steve McClaren also dropped Ayoze Perez from the starting lineup, bringing in Siem De Jong for his first Premier League start of the season and just his second for the Magpies. McClaren also leaves Aleksander Mitrovic on the bench for the second straight game, having scored just two goals in 11 appearances this season. The Magpies have dropped three of their last five league games, seeing the club outscored 11-2 in that span.
