Pacheco, who made 14 appearances for the Red Bulls during a loan spell in 2009 and won 86 caps for his national team between 2002 and 2013, was shot three times, including a fatal blow to his abdomen, outside of a gas station in his hometown of Santa Ana around 3:30 a.m. Two other members of Pacheco’s traveling party were also injured in the attack.
Pacheco celebrated his 33rd birthday on Dec. 1. His professional playing career came to an end in 2013, when he and 14 other Salvadoran players were handed lifetime bans for match-fixing.
Pacheco’s murder comes less than three weeks after Honduran midfielder Arnold Peralta was shot and killed outside in a mall parking lot in his native country.
