The long-rumored move to acquire Jan Kirchhoff is now a reality, as Sunderland has picked up some badly-needed strength for the middle of their defense.
Kirchhoff, 25, stands 6-foot-5 but has struggled for regular playing time at Bayern Munich since arriving at the Allianz Arena from Mainz in 2013.
Now he’ll only be asked to plug up an extremely leaky back line for Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light.
Though that seems his fit, Allardyce was quick to mention Kirchhoff’s ability to slide into the midfield
“He has real versatility as a player, being comfortable in both the centre back and midfield roles. He is desperately keen to experience the Premier League and our job now is to do everything we can to help him settle and adapt quickly to life in English football, so he can have a positive impact on our squad.”
Kirchhoff went on loan to Schalke last year, playing in 18 matches including four in Europe. His totals at Bayern Munich finish at 19 in two years, seven in the Bundesliga and two in the UEFA Champions League.
