Crystal Palace traveled to Villa Park expecting a victory, facing an Aston Villa side that was winless in 16 matches in all competitions.

However, the match ended 1-0 in favor of Villa, who win their first Premier League match since the opening day of the season.

Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made a huge mistake which led to the game’s only score, but Aston Villa was the better side throughout the match and deserved to take all three points.

After the match, Palace boss Alan Pardew called the performance one of their worst of the season, as the Eagles struggled to create any real chances on the attack.

A lot of things went wrong. We lacked energy, we lacked quality, one of our poorest displays of the season. Villa really deserved their victory – they worked so, so hard.

We couldn’t find an offensive link-up. Wayne Hennessey will obviously be disappointed with the goal – he got himself in a mess. But he’s been terrific for us and that’s the nature of goalies.

Wilfried Zaha hit the post 45 seconds into the match, but after that early chance, Palace was very poor moving forward. Alan Pardew’s men have now been held scoreless in four straight Premier League matches, as Palace’s last goal came nearly a month ago against Stoke City.

Palace dropped a massive chance to solidify their spot in the top half of the table, and being held off the scoresheet against Aston Villa has highlighted much bigger problems in the side. With their next two matches against Manchester City and Tottenham, the Eagles will need to find goals, or they could continue to slide down the table.
